Rome Travel Guide 2026: Practical Tips, Sights, and Itineraries
When to go
| Season | Months | Weather | Crowds | Prices | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar-May | Mild, 15-22°C, some rain | High | High | Best balance, book early |
| Summer | Jun-Aug | Hot, 28-35°C, humid | Extreme | Peak | Avoid unless you love queues |
| Fall | Sep-Nov | Warm Sep, cool Nov | Moderate | Medium | Good value in Oct-Nov |
| Winter | Dec-Feb | Cold 5-12°C, rain | Low | Low | Cheap but dark by 5pm |
April and October are perfect. June is a furnace. July 2026 will hit 38°C. The locals flee to the beach.
What to see
Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. One combined ticket. EUR 18 standard, EUR 24 with an arena floor upgrade. Book on the official coopculture site. No queues if you have a reservation. Allow 3 hours total. Skip the line inside is a lie. You still queue for security.
Vatican Museums. EUR 21 standard. EUR 29 with the 7.30am Prime slot. Book direct on museivaticani.va. Do not pay for a third-party ticket. The Sistine Chapel is at the end. Walk fast. Allow 3 to 4 hours. Skip the cafeteria. Bring your own water.
St. Peter's Basilica. Free entry. Queue is 30 to 90 minutes. Go at 7am or after 4pm. No shorts or bare shoulders. Dome climb costs EUR 10. 551 steps. Do it. The view is worth the sweat.
Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Free. Trevi is under renovation in parts of 2026? Check. If open, go at 7am. By 10am it is a scrum. Spanish Steps are steps. Nice. Not worth a special trip.
Pantheon. Entry now costs EUR 5 since July 2023. Worth it. 20 minutes inside. Do it on the way to lunch.
Borghese Gallery. EUR 15. Book weeks ahead. Strict 2-hour time slots. Art is incredible. Bernini's sculptures. Skip if you hate crowds in small rooms.
Trastevere. Free area to wander. Go for dinner. Good food. Real vibe. Avoid via della Scala tourist traps.

Where to stay
| Area | Vibe | Price per night (EUR) | Who suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centro Storico | Historic, loud, central | 200-400 | First-timers who want walkability |
| Trastevere | Lively, narrow streets, bars | 150-300 | Young travelers, nightlife lovers |
| Monti | Hip, near Colosseum, quieter | 180-350 | Couples, style seekers |
| Prati | Classy, wide streets, near Vatican | 150-250 | Families, older travelers |
| Termini | Cheap, scruffy, convenient | 80-150 | Budget travelers, early departures |
Do not stay at Termini unless your budget is tight. It is safe but grim. Trastevere is noisy after midnight. Prati is the best for sleep quality.
Getting around
Metro. Two lines A and B. Single ticket EUR 1.50, valid 100 minutes for one metro plus buses. Buy from machines. Do not validate twice. Avoid between 8am-9am and 6pm-7pm. Crammed.
Buses. Confusing. Google Maps works. Ticket same as metro. Night buses run when metro stops at 11.30pm. Use Uber or FreeNow taxis after midnight. Night bus can be sketchy.
Taxis. Licensed white taxis with meter. From airport to center fixed EUR 50. From Termini to Colosseum about EUR 12. Never take an unmarked taxi. Scam.
Walking. Rome is walkable. Wear comfortable shoes. Old cobblestones kill ankles. Carry water in summer. Fountains (nasoni) are free drinking water. Do not queue for bottled water at stalls.
Budget
| Category | Budget (EUR/day) | Mid-range (EUR/day) | Comfortable (EUR/day) |

Mistakes to avoid
1. Buying tickets at the Colosseum. The line is 2 hours. Book online two months ahead. Seriously.
2. Eating near tourist attractions. Via della Croce is a trap. Spaghetti with a view costs EUR 25. Walk 200m away. Pay EUR 12.
3. Falling for the gladiator photo scam. Guys in armor charge EUR 10 for a photo. Then they demand EUR 50. Walk past without eye contact.
4. Tipping like in the US. No. Tips are not expected. Round up the bill. Leave 1-2 EUR for good service. That is it.
5. Buying bottled water from street vendors. EUR 2 for a 0.5L bottle. Public fountains are free. They give cold water. Use a refillable bottle.
6. Visiting in August. Half of Rome closes. It is hot. Restaurants shut for weeks. Go in September instead.
7. Paying for the Rome Pass. It costs EUR 52 and covers two museums. Not worth it for most people. You still need to queue. Buy single tickets.
8. Touching anything in the Sistine Chapel. Guards will yell at you. No photos. No video. They mean it.
